iPhone SDK international!

Well, look at this; there’s no more “in the U.S.” specifically stated after “a limited number of developers” on the iPhone developer site. Indeed, apparently already people outside the U.S. are claiming to have been accepted.

Great news — now where’s MY acceptance, dagnabbit?

Which JavaScript library?

Question for those of you out there that have actually done any iPhone web apps so far — what JavaScript libraries, if any, are you using? I seem to see jQuery is generally popular; the righteous dudes over at BraveNewCode used Prototype/Scriptaculous for WPtouch and are looking into MooTools; any of you have feedback on those choices or have other recommendations for best iPhone web development practices?

Job: Avatron Software

Here’s a job you fellow budding iPhone programmers in, near, or willing to move to that other Vancouver may want to gander at — Apple alumnus Dave Howell’s new venture Avatron Software is looking for Cocoa engineers with iPhone enthusiasm:

Avatron Software is a new startup venture in Vancouver, Washington, dedicated to producing innovative software for the iPhone and iPod Touch platform.

We are now seeking senior software engineers with deep Cocoa experience and a passion for producing great products.

Strong candidates will:
- Have contributed significantly to at least one well-known Cocoa app;
- Have a history of technical leadership roles in commercial software development;
- Be creative and well-rounded; and
- Have at least begun to explore the iPhone SDK.

If you’re on LinkedIn (and if you’re not, you should be!) the posting is here. Otherwise, I imagine the link on the site will work too. Good luck!

First iFunding: Pelago Whrrl!

So if you’re like the rest of us budding iPhone developers out here, you’ve been idling your time away thinking up ideas for that $100 million dollar iFund for iPhone application development, maybe putting in an application or two, and wondering just how you get their attention; well, here’s one trick that works! At some point the page above was updated to list the first winner:

Seattle-based Pelago Inc. is the first company to receive financial backing through the iFund. Their social discovery service, Whrrl, will be available on the iPhone as a native application in June 2008.

Well, well, well. We’ll definitely have to check these people out in more detail soon. In the meantime, head over there yourself,

and, in their words,

  • Discover places, movies, and events by seeing where your friends are going.
  • Share experiences with friends.
  • Track the places you’ve been and the places you want to go.
  • Share your location with friends on the go.
  • Nifty! More details can be found in their FAQ here.

    Coherent: Ajax Cocoa Bindings

    Here’s another interesting tool for you JavaScript programmers; a library that implements Cocoa Bindings for your next game changing AJAX app. As they state at their Flickr browsing demo:

    “Flickr Browser is a demo of the Coherent library, which is a blatant rip off, er, loving copy of Apple’s Cocoa Bindings technology for the Web.”

    Heh. Well, if you design using MVC, even if you’ve never heard of Cocoa Bindings, you’ll probably find the library interesting at the least, check it out!

    Project page is here.
